GEORGETOWN: School of Communication and Media, Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) in collaboration with IO E-sport Sdn. Bhd. held a sharing session titled, “Behind the Screens: Crafting eSports Excellence with Industry Insiders!” The purpose of the program was to explore behind-the-scenes of crafting eSports excellence within the industry. Simultaneously, the session also gave students exposure to the world of eSports.
Mr Hanafi Jumrah, a lecturer in Media Production, stated that through this program, students can develop an interest in learning new skills in addition to broadcasting and media production.
“In the field of eSports, there is a huge emphasis on problem solving, teamwork, creativity, and communication. Students can also apply their skills in the field of eSport by making video and sound editing, graphic design, live broadcast, event planning and more,” he added.
Dr. Lim Shiang Shiang, the Program Manager for Media Production stated that she believes through this collaboration, future generations will not be left behind in this era of modernization and technology.
“I feel this is the best opportunity for us and students to learn new knowledge about eSport and thanks to IO E-sport teams who were sharing their experience and knowledge in the industry. We are always open to opportunities for sharing these experiences with our students,” she added.
Additionally, Ms Rachael Teh Pei Ling, the Head of Operations from IO E-sport Sdn. Bhd. said that through this sharing session, information literacy regarding what eSports games are not just about competitive video gaming but have become a major industry with professional players earning salaries, endorsements, and tournament winnings.
“On the other hand, it continues to grow and evolve, pushing the boundaries of gaming and entertainment while captivating audiences around the world,” said Rachael.
Darren Goh, a 2nd semester 3rd year student, said through this sharing session, he got a glimpse of what eSport was. Commenting that the exposure made him very interested in venturing into the field of eSports after graduation.
“Exposure to the roles in eSports attracted my interest to become a production crew in the field of eSports. With the knowledge I learned at HCUC, I believe and am confident to enter the eSports industry in future,” he added.
This sharing session opened the students’ eyes to eSports. Moreover, eSports presents a perfect avenue for students who may not be inclined towards traditional sports but seek the camaraderie of teamwork and the chance to acquire fresh skills. It additionally serves as a platform for fostering connections among varied demographics, as its inclusive nature welcomes individuals from all backgrounds.
Also present were the speakers from IO E-sport Sdn. Bhd. Project Manager, Mohd Afiq bin Resul and Project Manager, Ms Carmen Chang Kar Mun.
