Mass Comm in the Field of Hospitality.

Penang – Continuing on to Day 2 of HCUC’s Comm Fest 2023, the second day of Comm Fest 2023 began with a sharing session titled, “Mass Communication Career in the Hotel Industry”, by Mr. Lawrence Ayerru, a human resources manager from Hompton by the Beach Penang. 

Mr. Lawrence sharing his 30 years experience working in the hotel industry.

During the session, Mr. Lawrence gave the audience insight to his 30 years of experience working in the hotel industry. Mr. Lawrence had his humble beginnings as a footballer, but soon went into the hotel industry as a way to make ends meet right after secondary school. Mr. Lawrence also advised the audience about the importance of having a college or university degree as it correlates to getting higher wages in the industry.

As Hompton by the Beach is a relatively new hotel, Mr. Lawrence recalled how the Covid-19 pandemic affected tourism during the lockdown. In order for the hotel to stay in business, Mr. Lawrence alongside his staff worked hard to promote the hotel as tourism started to gain traction again after the pandemic had died down. He shared that the hotel had to produce videos, photos and content for social media to show that they had taken the necessary precautions to keep the hotel sanitized and cleaned. Which will give tourists the confidence to visit the establishment.

Mr. Lawrence mentioned that the hotel industry would ultimately require communications as a whole in order to function effectively. Whether it would be the front desk to the management team.

A Q&A session was also held with the intention of getting students to enquire about the different jobs in the hotel industry and how they function.
