Working and learning from home has become the new norm amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. But with this new norm comes the dangers of living a sedentary lifestyle with negative effects on our health. Staying active and regular exercise are vital.
To shed some light on the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle during the pandemic, a group of students from Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) is organising a virtual fitness programme, ‘MooFIT’, from 4th to 10th October, on Facebook.
Organising chairperson of MooFIT, Teh Kang Ze said that many people are still avoiding outdoor exercises due to the fear of contracting the virus. MooFIT aims to provide tips on effective indoor, at-home exercises.
“Several studies have revealed that the hybrid model of working and learning from home is likely to remain after the pandemic. However, staying indoors and a lack of physical activity increases the risk of several health issues such as being overweight, poor ergonomics and increased fatigue,” Teh explained.
Besides the significance of physical fitness, Teh mentioned that a balanced diet with sufficient nutrients is also crucial in keeping healthy, so the virtual fitness programme will also involve the sharing of facts and tips on healthy eating.
Lecturer advisor of MooFIT, Zhariff Zaharin said that physical fitness is often neglected when people have many other priorities to attend to, and adapting to the new normal which includes being stuck indoors has exacerbated this issue.
“People are spending a lot of time sitting in front of their computer screens everyday as we work or study from home. The downsides of this sedentary lifestyle are often overlooked,” he added.
By joining the virtual fitness programme, MooFIT, one will enjoy and benefit from social media fitness challenges, participate in a Tabata workshop run by a professional instructor, and listen to a sharing session on how to have a balanced diet. The details of these events are as follows:
Tabata workshop : 9 October, 6pm to 7pm
Sharing session on balanced diet : 10 October, 8pm to 9pm
Platform : Facebook live
