GEORGE TOWN: International students of Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) had to prolong their stay in the hostel when their intention of returning to their motherland came to a halt with the implementation of Movement Control Order (MCO) till 28 April 2020. In conjunction with the MCO, HCUC has taken all necessary and effective steps to ensure the students’ wellbeing.
Student Services Executive of HCUC, Cham Soon Kit stated that the administration is keeping close watch over the foreign students in hostel and provide them daily meal allowances. Although they are allowed to go out to buy their daily necessities, they are reminded of the safety precautions to be adhered and advised to limit their movements.
Dr. Yang Jie, the Head of International Office of HCUC said the contact details of national epidemic prevention and control hotline is readily available when needed. If any of the students develop symptoms of Covid-19, HCUC will immediately notify them for further action. As a preventive measure, HCUC students are required to report their body temperature regularly to make sure that their health condition is well-monitored.
He mentioned that these students who are following the IELTS Preparatory classes have started their online lessons which are scheduled on from Monday to Friday.
“Students were also isolated in the hostel during the pandemic in strict accordance with the requirements of the MCO. Although the students are confined in hostel, their free time is used wisely. They are learning to play guitar, watch movies, read and paint. In addition, lecturers also encourage the students to do simple exercises regularly,” he added.
An international student from Thailand, Kamonwan Chaiprachong also mentioned that meals are normally ordered online and the RM 15 meal allowance per day courtesy of the government is very much appreciated.
A student from China, Chen Pin Rui is satisfied with HCUC’s approach towards the emergency situation. He expressed that HCUC gave students great care and the lecturers who are responsible to take care of the international students have created a group chat to keep themselves updated with emerging developments.
“I regard the HCUC hostel as my second home, and also hope that the HCUC staff and students will stay safe and healthy,” said Chen.
