Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) will be organising the finals for its Host Idol Search Contest 2018 at Gurney Plaza, Penang (Ground floor, new wing) on July 14, to discover young media stars in the country who aspire to be TV hosts, Youtubers, journalists, newscasters and broadcasters.
The annual Host Idol Search Contest which is now in its third year running, serves as a platform for secondary school students to instil self-confidence and improve their communication skills to follow in the footsteps of the country’s famous media personalities.
The judges for the competition include popular local news anchors and hosts like Tan Ley Teng from NTV7, Owen Yap from 8TV and Ivan Toh from TV1.
The preparations for the finals started more than six months ago with the auditions first held in March. The top 45 semi-finalists were then shortlisted to attend a workshop on April 28 to hone their skills in Youtubing and live reporting. With the newly acquired skills from the workshop, they played the role of Youtubers to produce their own video clips and the top 15 contestants were selected to enter the finals.
During the finals, the contestants will compete in three categories: Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mandarin. They will be further shortlisted to just nine through two rounds of challenges. They are required to carry out a live reporting on stage during the first round, and live promotion of products during the second round.
HCUC Vice Chancellor Dr Beh Kok Hooi said Host Idol aims to widen the students’ horizons and explore their potential by exposing them to the latest media trends. “HCUC hopes to nurture the next generation of media talent in the country. We do this by combining traditional media with the latest techniques in information dissemination,” he said.
