George Town – Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) is pleased to announce the champions of the E-Host Idol Search Contest 2021 organised by its School of Communication and Media.
Nur Aina Nazira binti Mohd Salihin, Edwin Tan E-Min and Emily Ko Pinxin emerged as winners of the Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mandarin categories respectively. The winners will receive scholarships of up to RM25,000 in any of the academic programmes offered by HCUC.
Nur Aina, 18, from SMK Jengka Pusat 2, Pahang produced a commentary video elaborating the intricacies of ‘digital drugs’ or what she defines as modern-day addiction to digital gadgets.
Meanwhile, 19-year-old Edwin Tan made a tantalising how-to-tutorial on cooking pasta. The SMJK Heng Ee student’s personality added vibrancy to the whole video.
Winner of the Mandarin category of the E-Host Idol Search Contest 2021, Emily Ko, 15, from SMJK Convent Datuk Keramat became a food taster by finding recipes online, cooking them and evaluating the taste of those respective delicacies.
Dr. Beh Kok Hooi Vice-Chancellor of HCUC, said that the competition was held online for the first time due to the Covid-19 pandemic and nearly 100 students submitted creative works in order to become future media hosts.
He said the high-quality education provided by HCUC will equip students to face the various digitalisation challenges and opportunities of the 21st century and Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4.0).
“HCUC currently offers foundation, diploma, degree and masters programmes. HCUC will also have the first intake of its Master of Arts in Chinese Studies and Bachelor of Business Management (Honours) on August 30, 2021 when the semester commences,” he added.
The final of the E-Host Idol Search Contest 2021 was conducted live on Facebook from 2pm – 4.30pm on August 7. The top 15 contestants presented YouTube performances with themes like product reviews, social commentaries, cooking, skits and how-to tutorials. The contestants were rated based on their content, creativity, language, and personal style.
The E-Host Idol Search Contest 2021 is divided into the Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mandarin categories and is open to students between 15 and 19 years old across the country to participate. The top five contestants from each of the three categories were selected by the judges to compete for the E-Host Idol title in the finals. Each contestant produced a video and uploaded it to Facebook for public voting. Combined with the public votes, the judges comprising HCUC academics experienced in the field of journalism, broadcasting and new media selected the 15 finalists.
Having made its debut as “Anchor Idol Contest” in 2011, Host Idol is an annual initiative by the School of Media and Communication of HCUC with the objective of unleashing secondary students’ potential and enabling them to gain hands-on experience in media hosting.
The sponsors for the virtual competition are Hompton by the Beach Penang, Laksana Urus Sdn Bhd, Aziemas Enterprise and Nicole Koid from Mary Kay.
