PENANG: A group of students from the Bachelor of Communication (Public Relations) at HCUC had organized an event titled “Mr. and Ms. HCUC,” scheduled from 8 July to 17 July, 2024. This event involved all students and lecturers of HCUC and featured a bazaar, discovering a variety of food stalls, crafts, and game stations. The highlight of the event was the selection of the most beautiful and handsome students at HCUC, and the winner of the ‘Mr. and Ms. HCUC’ would get a cash prize.
A total of 27 students registered as contestants, 12 in the Ms. HCUC category and 15 in the Mr. HCUC. The contestants were revealed through Instagram and started their campaigning period on 8 July.
The contestants shared and promoted their profiles on Instagram to gain likes, as Instagram serves as the voting channel to determine the ‘Mr. and Ms. HCUC Best Popularity Award’.
“It will be unforgettable memories with friends during my university college life at HCUC,” said Tan Xin Chen, one of the contestants of Mr. HCUC.
The bazaar which was held from 15 to 17 July, included a myriad of food stalls and two handicrafts booths selling bracelets and earrings. Additionally, there were three game stations where participants could play games and win small prizes and gain an extra opportunity to vote for their favourite contestant.
An award ceremony was held at the HCUC Auditorium on 17 July, which was open to all students and guests, approximately 120 attendees gathered in anticipation of the results of ‘Mr. and Ms. HCUC’. Attendees received a gift and had the opportunity to participate in lucky draw sessions during the event.
The ceremony began with a welcoming speech from the event chairperson, Janice Khong. The ceremony was highlighted by a solo singing performance from Michelle Low, a student from the Diploma in Mass Communication, and dance performance by the HCUC Dance Club.
The ceremony proceeded with the distribution of all rewards. A representative from Princess Diary, one of the event sponsors, was invited to present prizes to the winners.
Bryan Wong Weng Kit, from the Bachelor in Communication (Advertising), and Rachel Lai Hui Lam, from the Diploma in Mass Communication, were awarded the ‘Mr. and Ms. HCUC Best Popularity Award.’
Ultimately, Lim Wei Kai, a student from the Bachelor in Communication (Advertising), won Mr. HCUC title and the Ms. HCUC title was won by Angeline Ong Xing Yen, a student from the Bachelor in Creative Multimedia.
Janice Khong, the event chairperson, expressed her excitement over the success of the event. “Initially, we considered organizing events like a sports carnival, but we realised it was quite common. We noticed HCUC hadn’t organized an event like selecting the most beautiful and handsome in college, and fortunately, the event was conducted successfully,” she remarked.
She also shared the challenges her team encountered with budget and sponsorship issues, including the high costs needed to organise the event.
She thanked all the sponsors who enabled the success of the event. Janice also expressed deep gratitude to Ms. Nur Adillah for her guidance throughout the event, from initial planning to final preparations.
