Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) recently organised a webinar entitled “Manglish and Durian – The Perks of Penang” on 6 May 2021 at 2:30pm through Google Meet. The Centre for Languages, in collaboration with the International Office, were represented by the webinar speakers, Mr Prakash Velloo, English Language Lecturer, and Dr Yang Jie, Head of International Office. First and foremost, Mr Prakash shared about the tourist attractions in Penang and Malaysian culture. Before that, he had shared some history of Penang so that the students from Indonesia have a better understanding of Penang.
Mr. Prakash started sharing the top 5 tourist attractions in Penang such as Kek Lok Si temple, Clan Jetties, Peranakan Mansion and so forth. These are all the must visit tourist spots once you visit Penang. We can really enjoy the beautiful picturesque scenery at these tourist spots. Since Penang is known as a food haven, surely, Mr Prakash shared the top 5 must-try foods in Penang which will tickle our taste buds. For example, cendol, fried oyster omelette and char koay teow. However, the most popular food in Penang which is ranked number 1, is Asam Laksa. Usually people like to eat it due to the specialty of the soup as the noodles are served with either rich and spicy curry coconut milk or sour asam soup.
Conversely, Dr Yang Jie discussed the programmes in our college. Communication and Media studies, Business Management, Accounting, Computing and Chinese Studies are the programmes offered in HCUC. Nelson Mandela once said, “There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” Passion could increase our confidence level in order to be successful. Therefore, it is vital for students to choose a course they are passionate about. Our college offers various fields of programmes so that students have the opportunity to select their favourite courses.
Dr Yang Jie explained students would have a wonderful experience in HCUC. Students can enjoy the beautiful view such as the artistic pavilion and the green trees in front of the Chinese Cultural Centre. There are also state-of-the-art lecture halls in our campus. High quality education can also be found in our college. We have dedicated lecturers who have put in their hard work and effort to share their valuable knowledge with the students. All of our study materials of the subjects are well prepared. In addition, HCUC provides a modern life for the students. For instance, we have a TV and radio studio for students to experience shooting and recording broadcasts. High end equipment is provided to shoot high quality videos and record professional sound recordings.
Why does our college want to carry out activities such as orientation camp, graduation night and outdoor visiting? The trend of the vibrant and healthy lifestyle can be built by organising these activities. Students can make new friends through these activities so that their life in HCUC would not be lonely. With the memorable activities and lovely friends, they create a lot of happy memories in their university life.
Moreover, HCUC also offers the Intensive English course. A video about the thoughts and feelings of the students in this Intensive English course was shared during the webinar. The students from China stated that their English has improved a lot be it in writing, reading, listening or speaking. As English is an international language, it is crucial for everyone from every country to learn the language. As they say, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. By knowing the language which everyone knows, it is easier to communicate and even lead the world. After the sharing, there was a Q&A session for the lecturers to share more about HCUC.
In a nutshell, it is interesting to share about the tourist spots and the mouth-watering food in Penang. The students from Indonesia are also able to know more about HCUC through this webinar especially the programmes offered, activities on campus and the advantages of our college.
