GEORGE TOWN: “Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) will be responsible to our community,” said HCUC Vice Chancellor Dr Beh Kok Hooi.
The seriousness of the pandemic and the limitations imposed by the Movement Control Order (MCO) has caused students to be burdened with worries and confusion about the learning methods adopted for the new semester. Dr Beh said he had begun discussing and planning with the team of lecturers the appropriate measures taken to continue delivery of education before the MCO was announced.
He urged everyone to remain calm because HCUC is well-prepared to work together for the creation of an excellent learning experience by replacing the traditional face-to-face learning with online lectures and learning activities. Being a partner of University of Southern Queensland, Australia, HCUC is familiar with online education.
He said that students taking courses that require studio work, such as those who major in Broadcasting are allowed to come to campus only when it is deemed necessary and unavoidable. Even so, coming to campus will only be permitted in accordance with specific circumstances delineated by the Malaysian government in response to the latest developments of the pandemic.
Implementing E-Learning
Dr Beh added that students undertaking courses with requirements of practical assignments conducted in public spaces like video shootings could focus on understanding the theories involved before they eventually commence practical classes. With this, the students would not have to expose themselves unnecessarily to possible infections, and remain safe indoors.
“We will continue to adjust our teaching, learning, and on- and off- campus activities according to the guidelines of the Malaysian government.”
“Although E-Learning will pose challenges, we are developing skills and resources that could prepare us for a digital future . After the MCO is lifted, students will not be required to come to campus as they will continue online classes until further notice .
“For students who have problems such as unstable internet connection, they may come to campus once the MCO is lifted. HCUC will reorganise the layout of classrooms so that students will remain safe as they benefit from the internet access on campus,” Dr. Beh explained.
According to Dr. Beh, HCUC is currently discussing with the Finance Department to come up with arrangements for financial assistance to help students facing financial hardship . Further discussions will be held with the Board of Directors before a final solution is agreed on.
Working from Home
“It is fortunate that our team of lecturers and students are very cooperative. There is much happening within the HCUC community of staff and students, as we work together to ensure the continuity of quality education from the safety of our homes .”
“Delivery of teaching and learning may look a little different, and we recognise that these are difficult times. But we can take the opportunity to gain the new experience of working from home.”
With regards to HCUC’s Convocation 2020, Dr. Beh promised that while the graduation ceremony may be delayed, it would not be cancelled.
Dr Beh hoped that students would be able to carry out independent learning during this period. If students encounter any learning difficulties , they could always consult their lecturers who are using their expertise to support the community. He added that everyone could take this opportunity to get along with their family members, stay safe and stick to good hygiene habits.
“HCUC has taken all precautions in combating the effects of COVID-19. In addition to providing masks and hand sanitizers for students and staff, daily temperature checks will be carried out once we resume normal operations to protect the health and safety of our community,” said Dr. Beh.
