Penang, 24 July 2024 – HCUC Students Organize “Off-Screen Campaign” to Address Smartphone Addiction
Han Chiang University College of Communication’s final-year Public Relations and Advertising students successfully organized a campaign titled “Off-Screen,” aimed at raising youth awareness about smartphone addiction and its associated health issues.
Off-Screen Chairperson Jingle Tan said the campaign, held from 19 to 20 July 2024, sought to address this growing concern by promoting a balanced lifestyle where technology is used mindfully and offline activities are embraced.
“We have noticed an increasing number of youths spending excessive time on their phones, often to the point of addiction. This overuse not only affects their physical health but also their
mental well-being and social interactions.”
“The Off-Screen Campaign aims to encourage youth to unplug and engage in lively, offline activities,” she said.
The campaign kicked off with an insightful talk titled “Smartphone Addiction among Youth,” delivered by a Mental Health Educator from Penang Adventist Hospital.
This session highlighted the growing issue of smartphone addiction among young people and provided practical tips for managing screen time.
The second day, known as “Splash and Seek Day,” featured a fun-filled treasure hunt and water fight.
Six teams of enthusiastic youths competed in various challenges, promoting teamwork and physical activity.
The campaign was the final-year project for the Diploma in Mass Communication (Public Relations and Advertising option) students, as part of the requirements for the course “PR: Management and Practice”.
