GEORGE TOWN: The highly anticipated annual event, George Town Heritage Celebrations (GTHC), returned for its 16th edition this year with a diverse array of programmes that welcomed visitors to celebrate George Town’s UNESCO World Heritage Site status on the 7th July 2024, in conjunction with Georgetown Heritage UNESCO Day.
Attendees were treated to a vibrant and immersive experience that transported them through the rich tapestry of time, culture, and tradition.
The event highlighted Penang’s uniquely diverse heritage enclave while emphasizing the importance of preserving its historical legacy.
Cultural enthusiasts and families alike enjoyed a plethora of performances and even an interactive dance floor that showcased the city’s multicultural heritage. Traditional dances and music, influenced by various ethnic backgrounds, captivated audiences and provided an engaging experience.
Moreover, the event featured live demonstrations and workshops of traditional crafts and skills, allowing visitors of all ages to participate in local artisanal traditions hands-on. These demonstrations offered insights into the materials, techniques, and historical contexts of the crafts, fostering a deeper connection between attendees and the cultural legacy of the community. From Chinese paper cutting to batik making, attendees were spoiled with choices.
The 16th edition of GTHC successfully combined entertainment with education, celebrating Georgetown’s rich heritage while encouraging cultural preservation and appreciation among its visitors.
“I experienced a diverse range of cultural aspects that were forgotten by our generation, which made me realize the importance of preserving cultural heritage as a true blue Penangite after attending this celebration.
“I am very glad to have the chance to capture these moments with my camera for future generations to appreciate.” shared Han Chiang University College of Communication student, Ong Yuan Heng.
