Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) was a hive of activity today (April 8) when freshies came a-calling, many walking happily in groups to embark on a new chapter in their higher education life.
The students’ excitement, hilarity, enthusiasm and attentiveness to briefings by the deans of Schools and heads of department were clearly visible during the Orientation Day for the 2019 new intake for the various programmes.
Vice-chancellor Dr Beh Kok Hooi presented certificates of scholarship to 51 students for the April intake. Among the Chancellor Scholarship recipients are Communication and Media students Ng Hui Wen, Goh Wei Yee & Tam Yu Jie, Chinese Studies student Tang Jun Heng, Business & Management students Goh Tian Hui, Raymond Ng Teik Jin and Chin Jing Aun and Applied Creative Arts & Design students Lye Kah Wai and Lee Jia Yee.

Others who received scholarships include Saw Jin Wen, Toh Yan Xian, Lim Sze Min, Audrey Lim Xue Chi and Wan Erina Heidi Meor.
In his welcoming address, Dr Beh urged the students to study hard and consistently maintain good grades so as to continuously receive the scholarships and bursaries.
Dr Beh noted that the freshies had joined at the right time when HCUC has started its first cohort of dual awards degree students programme with University of Southern Queensland (USQ), Australia. Dual awards degree means a student will receive two degrees, one from HCUC and one from USQ when he or she graduates from HCUC.
“In this way, the student will save several thousands of Ringgit to study overseas and not being away from family members for long periods of time.
“HCUC is not only an education provider, we empathise the hardship of parents trying to support their children at institutions of higher education. Thus, we have a complete range of scholarship and bursary awards for deserving students,” said Dr Beh.
He said apart from helping those with academic excellence, those who excelled in sports, or demonstrated excellent leadership qualities or talents in their communities would also be rewarded.
“We are also the only institution of higher education that provides a special Chancellor Scholarship to all UEC graduates or those with an “A” in SPM Chinese subject.
Besides the award of the Chancellor Scholarship, HCUC offers up to 100% scholarships, bursaries and rebates of RM4,000 for alumni.
“HCUC is a great place for you to begin this new exciting phase of life. We pride ourselves to provide you with wide and spacious greenery, opportunities to contribute both ideas and actions, committed and friendly lecturers, attentive students’ services, and ever-listening and supporting management staff to make your years here with us worthwhile.”
Dr Beh noted that HCUC has a long list of graduates who have done well in their career path, winning Excellence Awards and working in multinational companies (MNCs).
The Orientation programme included briefings by various schools heads on academic affairs, English Language, social media ethics, dress code and counselling.
The students also met with the Deans, programme managers and academic advisors.
The whole day programme ended with a campus tour and an oath-taking ceremony led by student representative, Teh Kang Ze.
Currently, HCUC has five schools, namely Communications & Media, Applied Creative Arts & Design, Business & Management, Chinese Studies and Languages & Translation. It offers one foundation, nine diploma, seven undergraduate and one master’s degree programmes. The intakes for foundation, diploma and degree programmes except Chinese Studies are in April, August and November while the intake for the master’s degree is April and November.
