It is not often one sees students intensely discussing with their friends the correct English grammar and tenses to use in certain sentences, except for when they are inside the class doing some writing exercises.
Thus, it was great to see more than 150 Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) students busy flocking in groups to discuss basic grammar such as the indefinite or definite articles and connective words, as part of the mission to win a treasure hunt challenge, recently.
It was one of the activities lined up for a week, in conjunction with English Week 2018 organised by HCUC’s School of Languages and Translation, which was held from June 4 to June 8.
Besides the treasure hunt challenge, other activities of the Pirates of the Caribbean-themed English Week 2018 were tongue twisters, translation games, a design workshop, crossword puzzles and a creative writing competition.
The Dean of the School of Languages and Translation, Prakash Velloo, said English Week 2018 served as a platform to raise the awareness of the importance of the English language among the HCUC community in an entertaining way.

“Among all the activities, the treasure hunt challenge is the highlight of English Week 2018. Students have to display great team spirit amidst solving the fun mysteries in their pursuit to be crowned as the winner. “I hope all the activities will motivate them to keep improving their English skills,” he added.
Meanwhile, the prize-giving and closing ceremony of English Week 2018 was held on June 8. Certificates were also given to students who had successfully completed their Intensive English Course (IEC) during the ceremony.
