PENANG – Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) has successfully held its orientation for its new students, marking the arrival of a new year of educational excellence.
Nearly 200 new students applied for HCUC’s diploma and degree programmes across its four schools of studies, with the orientation being conducted in two separate days on Monday and Tuesday, 26 and 27 August 2024.
The two day orientation was held separately, which started with the diploma intake on Monday, who were greeted by HCUC Vice Chancellor, Associate Prof. Dr. Beh Kok Hooi, while the degree intake was greeted by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Ms. Jenny Khoo Gim Hoon on Tuesday.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Beh stated that the institution is committed to ensuring the students’ academic experiences would be challenging but rewarding.
“I acknowledge that the world we are stepping to is an ever changing world…your actions and words matter,” Dr. Beh said. He quoted Nelson Mandela, saying that “education is the most powerful weapon that can be used to change the world.”
On the other hand, Ms. Jenny Khoo cautioned the students on the importance and “pervasiveness” of social media in today’s society. “The pen may be mightier than the sword, but the ‘post’ is mightier than the pen”, she said.
Oath statement ceremonies for diploma and degree intakes were observed by the Student Representatives Council (SRC) president Lim Min Jun and vice president Teh Ewe Huat respectively. The session was followed by course briefings from the Student Service and society recruitments.
Station games and campus tours proceeded under the guidance of the SRC for the remainder of the day under twelve groups and eight stations. They were given special banners under the theme of the animation movie franchise Despicable Me.
Both sessions concluded in the evening, with classes of the new semester expected beginning on 28 August.
