PENANG – 988’s very own radio DJ, Alsen came to Han Chiang University College of Communication to visit its students as well as share his experiences of becoming a DJ. He revealed that being a DJ can be quite challenging. Additionally, he also supported HCUC’s Chon Jiong Ern, who had managed to make it into the top 6 of the second season of “Super Trainee”.
In his sharing session, Alsen mentioned being a radio DJ requires a person to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and to be quick on their feet when unfavorable situations arise. In these situations, DJs are expected to seek assistance from colleagues or the technical department whilst ensuring that the program is still running smoothly.
Often one of the biggest challenges he’s faced is having to conduct interviews with celebrities. In the session, he often encounters very rigid and scripted responses which can lead to a lack of on-air time during the programs. Therefore, he emphasized that
DJs will always need to find ways to guide celebrities towards a response, expand on topics, or even engage in casual conversations. Which helps the build-up towards the main topic at hand.
Alsen highlighted these experiences during the “Super Trainee, Campus Insights” talk which was held on 25 May. During the talk, he interacted with over a hundred students who were in attendance, he also took part in an on-site interview, conducted a Q&A session, and gave out small souvenirs to those in attendance.
Through his experience, Alsen shared that if radio listeners truly enjoy a particular DJ, they should let them know as it brings DJs great joy. Although DJs accompany their listeners, provide solace and companionship, DJs can oftentimes feel lonely too. They often sit in a broadcast studio talking to the equipment never knowing who their audiences are.
Despite the numerous challenges and hardships that an aspiring DJ has to face, Alsen strongly advised the students of HCUC to never give up on their dreams and to remain steadfast in their beliefs, though the road may be rough ahead, he also told students to never be swayed by the opinions of others.
Alsen also added that, in this day of modern technology, everyone has an opportunity to be discovered, however it is essential that people have a basic understanding of different media platforms and have skills to further express oneself.
