The paintings above were created by Edwin Parker “Cy” Twombly Jr., an American painter, sculptor, and photographer.
He is one of the most expensive modern artists, with paintings selling for anywhere between $2 million (~RM8 million) to $75 million (~RM325 million).
Many people wonder why he is so popular. He creates artworks that seem like children’s drawings and paintings, but how did he become famous? Many people are unaware that his major contribution was to connect his study of ancient art and literature to late-twentieth-century modernist practice, transforming historically distant references into a bracingly current artistic style.
Why are his artworks receiving so much feedback from the public, and the remarks are so critical?
One important issue to note is that most of the individuals that remark on the artworks do not understand what ART means.
What is the significance of art? What exactly is art?
To appreciate contemporary art, one must first gain a thorough understanding of the meaning of the term ART; else, they will refer to it as a children’s painting.
Let’s discuss it since they call it a “kids drawing”. Kids as young as two or three-years old sketch to express themselves in family photos. They have the purest heart and sincerity to want to show you their family through their drawing; because they are only young kids, they are lacking the skills to draw a realistic drawing, but they draw it with the purest and most sincere heart; the drawing may appear ghostly or out of shapes, but that is what they want to express. That is art!
“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”
– Edgar Degas, 1843 – 1917.
