Mass communication has gained popularity among the younger generation because of the development of the media industry promising a wider range of career opportunities such as media producer, journalist, public relations, content creator, editor, copywriter, scriptwriter etc.
Film production is an interesting field
Poh Weizhe, a Year 2 Bachelor of Communication (Media Production) (Hons) student from Han Chiang University College of Communication (HCUC) pursued Information Technology (IT) before. However, he later found that the course was different from what he had earlier expected, thus he decided to change to Mass Communication.
“I’ve worked as a part timer with different film production companies before. When I was on the set and saw all the shooting techniques and equipment of a crew, I felt so interested and I hoped I could do similar jobs in the future,” he said.
Nevertheless, Poh’s family was hesitant to support his decision of joining mass communication studies and was hoping he could reconsider it. Yet, determination is keeping Poh to continue his studies despite the sceptical aura in his home.
“My parents may think the prospect of Mass Communication is not bright enough. However, I think if I work hard, I will prove to them that my choice is worthwhile and has a good future,” he said.
Learn to cooperate with different people
Ooi Kay Qi, a Year 2 Diploma in Mass Communication student, specialising in Broadcasting said that her ambition of becoming a director and launching her own production studio in the future has led her to pursue Mass Communication studies.
Her biggest challenge, according to Ooi, is to cooperate with new or unfamiliar people in finishing a task.
“Because everyone has a different style of doing things, and we do not always have the opportunity to work with people we might be comfortable with, so I think it is really about learning to adapt and be prepared to work with people from all walks of life,” explained Ooi about the trouble of meeting and interacting with people.
Although Mass Communication is a challenging field, she still hopes to successfully complete her studies in the aim of chasing her dream. She thinks the Mass Communication course has taught her to be courageous while learning.
“I think what I’ve learned is how to get out of my comfort zone and be brave enough to try out different things. After all, there are a lot of things you have to do in the communication field,” she said.
Help in my future career
Lee Yuan Run, a Year 2 student in Diploma of Mass Communication, specialising in Broadcasting said his primary reason to pursue Mass Communication is because of his interest in hosting and here, the chances to enhance his behind the scene knowledge are abundant. He hopes to become a variety show host in the future.
“Although my goal is to become a host, studying this course allows me to grasp the professional knowledge of video shooting and participate in many productions. I believe this will help my future career. Knowing what is going on behind the scenes will not only make my work smooth in the future, but it also provides me with a lot of knowledge in terms of creating content and its techniques,” he said.
“Many people think that the Mass Communication course is easy and only suitable for students with poor results. But in fact, it involves a lot of theories, and technological expertise. It is not as simple as one may think. If you are not really passionate about it, do not undertake it,” he said.
